The Han River cuts through the center of Seoul and is loved by Koreans as a symbol of nature meeting the city. Koreans consider it the second most iconic location in the city, only coming behind Namsan. There are many activities that can be found along the river which offer a unique perspective of everyday Korean living.
History
As with many early civilizations, a source a water was critical in developing areas of commerce and living. The Han River, or Hangang in Korean, was a major water trade route with China. It also helped connect the different regions of Korea as a unified peninsula in the past and was a symbol of one unified nation. Today it still serves as a water source for many Korean citizens although not used anymore for trade.
Parks along the Han River
There are many public areas for taking strolls or having picnics along the Han River. Below are a few that are worth checking out!
Yeouido Hangang Park
Yeouido is a financial and media center of Seoul boasting large broadcasting buildings and office parks. This area is great to check out just for a walk to see the city or to grab some food at a nicer restaurant. Right next to this area is the Yeouido Hangang Park which is probably one of the best ways to experience the river. The area was spruced up by the Hangang Renaissance Project and there are many activities to do with your family, friends, or by yourself!
Nanji Hangang Park
This park was designed for outdoor activities like camping, grilling, and water sports. If you’re looking for somewhat of a natury getaway during your stay in Seoul, consider visiting Nanji Park. There are showers and barbeques open to the public but make sure you consider booking a campsite early if you’re looking to stay for a night or more. During peak seasons, campsites can be fully booked way in advance.
Activities Along the Han River
